The Breitling Navitimer Watch History

The Breitling Navitimer replica was designed to help pilots coordinate time and navigation. The watch was equipped with a built-in circular slide rule that let pilots calculate critical measurements such as fuel consumption, drift angle and ground speed with- out carrying a slide rule into the cockpit. The Navitimer made it easier to perform calculations in-flight and ensured that a slide rule was always close at hand. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) chose the Navitimer as its official watch. In the 1950s and ’60s, many Navitimers had the AOPA logo.

The original Navitimer’s 40-mm case was large by 1950s standards, but the numbers on its scales were still tiny. The Navitimer 01, which debuted in 2011, had a larger, 43-mm case. (It also contained Breitling’s first manufacture movement.) And the newest version of the Navitimer 01, our test watch, is even larger, at 46 mm. It was introduced in 2014.

The larger dial naturally offers better legibility: the slide rule has bigger numerals that are easier to read. And it’s easier to operate the slide rule on the larger watch. But the scales and contrasting subdials show so much data, the wearer may have trouble deciphering it all, even on the larger dial. Legibility would be better if Breitling eliminated the dial’s tachymeter scale, which isn’t absolutely necessary on a pilots’ watch.

Review Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar 41mm

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar replica, consisting of four new models in total: steel with a white or blue dial, and rose gold with a white or blue dial.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendars, like the Royal Oaks that were launched in 2012, now come in larger, 41-mm-diameter cases. This new case size warranted a new movement (Caliber 5134), as well as offering more room on the dial with which to increase legibility and add a new function.

Audemars Piguet in-house Caliber 5134 is based on its predecessor, Caliber 2120. The automatic movement beats at frequency of 2.75Hz (19,800 vph), with 374 total parts, including 38 jewels, and a 40-hour power reserve. Movement thickness was kept to 4.31 mm, allowing the designers to maintain the thin case dimensions, which typically means a more comfortable fit on the wrist.

Technically speaking, the rose-gold, skeletonized oscillating weight, which can be custom-decorated upon a consumer’s request, is bidirectional, meaning it can wind the movement in both directions of motion. The balance has variable inertia blocks, a flat balance spring, and mobile stud-holder.

Popular Watch 2016 Omega Seamaster Ploprof

Omega Seamaster PloProf 1200M replica looked identical to the PloProf 600M version of almost 40 years earlier. On Fratellowatches we wrote about the PloProf watches several times, but never took the time to put the two models together and have a closer look. The construction of the case and locking mechanism is exactly where the main difference can be found between the original Omega PloProf 600 and the PloProf 1200 of 2009. The Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1200M reference 224.30.55.21.01.001 has no monocoque case and uses a helium valve instead. Also, the crown has a different mechanism to it. Where you used the square bolt as a crown and the actual crown looking part as a screw-down crown.

Omega is working hard to make sure most of their watches will have the in-house developed Co-Axial movement. The Seamaster Ploprof 1200 has the in-house developed caliber 8500 movement that we’ve also seen in a number of other Seamaster and De Ville watches. The original Ploprof 600 uses the Omega caliber 1002 movement. The new watch still comes with an Isofrane strap or the beautiful stainless steel mesh bracelet. I am not going to elaborate on the Co-Axial caliber 8500 movement as it has been discussed here several times.

Popular Watch 2016 Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Annual Calendar

According to Omega, the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra replica pays tribute to their rich maritime heritage. Interpreting this marketing direction from Omega is difficult for me. While the Seamaster is water resistant, this particular Aqua Terra collection, with its lyre lugs, reminds me more of the Speedmaster, Railmaster and Seamaster 300 models that were introduced in 1957.

On the outer ring of the dial you will find the minute markers. This part doesn’t have the teak-deck pattern and therefore creates another level of depth. The polished hour markers are applied to the dial and are filled with Super Luminova. Although the hands are not 100% the same as the Broad Arrow hands that Omega used in the past, there is a strong resemblance due to the big arrow on the minute hand and second hand.

The day and date aperture at 3 o’clock is nicely integrated with the dial by using discs in the same color. The printing on the discs is in white and gives it great contrast.

Turning the watch around, you will immediately notice the beautifully finished Omega movement. You are looking at the Omega caliber 8601, a Co-Axial movement with an annual calendar feature. This means it will do the correct jump from the last day of the month to the first day of the month, except on the 1st of March. This is a useful complication that only requires adjustment on the last day of February (or the first day of March).  The Aqua-Terra may not be a perpetual calendar, which requires no adjustment, but these movements are far more expensive than annual calendar watches.
